Spotlight on...Matilda Fitzmaurice

A series of posts showcasing our NEC and officer candidates

Dear subscribers,

Have you ever been told that a period of casualised work is just a ‘rite of passage’ in our profession? Yes, us too. We think this attitude has to change.

Let us introduce Dr Matilda (Tilly) Fitzmaurice, the UCU Commons candidate for representative of casualised members (HE) on the NEC. Tilly is a Research Associate at Newcastle University, having moved to the north east in 2017 for her PhD at Durham University. She currently sits on the UCU LGBT+ Members’ Standing Committee, and was previously a member of the Women Members’ Standing Committee from 2021-2023. In this short, captioned video, Tilly outlines what her priorities would be if elected in this role:

  • Greater cooperation between UCU anti-cas and equalities work

  • An expansive, holistic approach to tackling precarity in HE

  • Furthering UCU’s work on the climate emergency, and how this relates to precarious work

You can read Tilly’s election address on our website, and she’s also written an extended election address, in which she goes into greater detail on her approach to anti-cas work. You can read this here.

In solidarity,
